Ian Richardson

Ian Richardson (1934 - 2007)

Actor Ian Richardson died unexpectedly in his sleep in the early hours of this morning at the age of 72.

He was born in Edinburgh where he went to George Heriot's School and then trained at the Royal Scottsih Academy of Music and Drama.

He was most recently seen on stage at the National Theatre last year as Sir Epicure Mammon in Nicholas Hytner's production of Ben Jonson's The Alchemist alongside Alex Jennings, Simon Russell Beale and Leslie Manville, and in Pauline Macaulay's The Creeper, directed by Bill Bryden, at the Playhouse.

He is probably most widely known for playing Sir Francis Urquhart in the BBC's House Of Cards, based on Michael Dobbs' novel, and his catchphrase "You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment" has passed into common usage, especially in political circles. He won the 1991 Best Television Actor award for the part in 1991.

His work on stage was extensive and he spent fifteen years with the RSC, his final part being Richard III (on whom he based his performance as Urquhart). He remained an RSC associate. he appeared on broadway in Peter Brook's Marat/Sade in 1965 and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance as Henry Higgins in the 1976Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. He also appeared in Edward Albee's Lolita, based on the Nabakov book, on Broadway in 1981.

On television he appeared in Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy as "Tinker", as Sherlock Holmes on two occasions, as Sir Godber Evans in Porterhouse Blue, and as Lord Groan in Gormanghast. His films included Brazil (1985) and Dark City (1998), and he played Polonius in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990).

He was made a CBE in 1989.

he was due to start filing an episode of the TV series Midsomer Murders next week.

He leaves a wife, Maroussia, and two sons, one of whom is the actor Miles Richardson, who is currently working with the RSC in the Histories ensemble.
