Igniting Scotland! Two of Scotlands Leading playwrights - John Clifford (Faust, Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh) and Chris Hannan (Elizabeth Gordon Quinn, National Theatre of Scotland) - will be giving a playwriting workshop to over fifty people at Mitchell Library, Glasgow, on Saturday 27th May 2006 at 2-4pm. This public event launches Playwrights Studio, Scotlands National Playwriting Competition Ignite. The competition aims to find undiscovered voices for Scotlands stage, using a contemporary piece of literature as inspiration. Entrants send in a short play scene. The winner will receive six months support, advice and training to develop their scene into a full length play, which will be given a rehearsed reading as part of Glasgow City Councils Aye Write! Festival, in February 2007. Previous winners of our earlier competitions have gone onto receive commissions from leading theatre companies and venues in Scotland. We are really excited that another new playwright for Scotland will be discovered through this years competition. They may even be attending the workshop on Saturday! said Julie Ellen, Creative Director of the Playwrights Studio, Scotland Councillor John Lynch, Convenor of the Culture and Leisure Services and Chair of the Aye Write Committee said, The Aye Write festival is about inspiring more reading, writing and creativity by all sectors of the Glasgow community. The Ignite playwriting competition does exactly this and provides a great opportunity for new writers to showcase their work at one of Scotlands premier literary festivals. The workshops are designed to be engaging and practical, but most of all fun. All those taking part will come away being inspired to write a play, possibly for the first time and be able to enter this exciting competition. There will be another session on the same day from 10am - 12noon at the Westwood Business Centre, 69 Aberdalgie Road, Glasgow, G34 9HJ. Places on both sessions are free but limited, so please contact Claire on 0141-332-4403 or claire@playwrightsstudio.co.uk Details of IgniteRead something inspirational lately?
