James Cosmo has had to withdraw because of ill health from The Pyramid Texts, which plays at Birmingham REP in May.

Scottish actor Cosmo appeared in films including Highlander, Trainspotting and Troy. On television he has been in Game of Thrones.

The Pyramid Texts is a monologue from BAFTA-winning writer Geoff Thompson. Lonely old boxer Ray is alone in a gym with a video camera. As he reminisces about a lifetime of fights, he lets his guard down to reveal a heartbreak hidden beneath his hardened exterior. It leads to an “emotionally devastating knockout conclusion”.

The REP says the show will be recast as soon as possible. The Pyramid Texts is due to run from 26 until 30 May.
