It's All the Critics' Fault

Producer Beth Trachtenberg has blamed the critics for the premature closure of the new musical Imagine This (New London), which is to close on 20th December after a run of just a month.

"Night after night," she said, "we have seen audiences stirred to the depths of their emotions by this show. Fundamentally I do not think the critics should be making a moral judgment over the subject matter and moreover that they are generally not prepared to embrace musicals. I've witnessed the public's response to the show that is directly opposed to a narrow-minded critical belief that musicals are limited in their emotional impact and ability to deal with meaningful subject matter in a powerful and sensitive manner. I am enormously proud of Imagine This and of the wonderful cast and crew."

And it was panned by the critics. Charkes Spencer in the Telegraph described it as a "manipulative and morally dubious show" and the Guardian's Michael Billington wrote, "There are moments, such as a perky comic number preceding the Masada suicide, that leave one grinding one's teeth in despair. I don't doubt the good intentions of all concerned, but the talent is simply not up to the task."

The BTG's Philip Fisher wrote, "The book spends far too long bordering on the absolutely tasteless, both with tales of collaboration and love across murderous boundaries but also with unfunny jokes that reinforce racial stereotypes."
