The Manchester-based Flare15 festival has been inundated with 270 applications from 47 different countries in response to its open-call for submissions, more than double the 121 applications it received for its first festival in 2011.

The event is committed to bringing the most radical and innovative new theatre from across the globe to Manchester this summer.

Four performances have already been announced, including two Spanish works: one combining contemporary literature, art and choreography; the other offering audiences a head-first dive into popular culture.

he festival also features a Dutch piece for two bodies testing the limits of intimacy, and an award-winning show from Belgium embracing the vulnerability of language itself.

Performances will take place in four Manchester venues, Contact, Royal Exchange Theatre, Z-arts and Martin Harris Centre, with the full programme to be announced in May.
