In the Mix - A Commission for a Playwright

The Hawth in Crawley, a leading theatre in West Sussex and the hub of Crawley's diverse community arts activity, in partnership with Pursued by a Bear, recently identified as one the UK's most exciting and promising young touring theatre companies, to develop a new piece of theatre which reflects the very dynamic effect that the African community has had on Crawley, one of Britain's most culturally diverse towns. The town is the home to a number of immigrant and post-immigrant communities. Why? It is on the doorstep to Gatwick Airport. Without the labour of those communities the airport could simply not run.

The project, In The Mix, requires a playwright who can match the following requirements:

  1. Firstly a writer from an African background who will be commissioned to write a play that initially tours theatres, arts centres and community venues in the South East of England.
  2. That writer will have experience in playwriting and community development, this will include clear evidence of at least one professional production of his or her work. Plus evidence of at least three years experience of working in a community environment, including the teaching of drama and playwriting/storytelling techniques.
  3. The project will start in earnest in April of 2004. Further development work will take place in July of 2004 for three weeks. Dates for touring are as yet unplanned.
  4. The commission's terms are in accordance with the ITC/Writers Guild.
  5. This is a joint commission between national touring theatre company, Pursued by a Bear, a member of the ITC and the Hawth in Crawley.

Expressions of interest in the project should come to:

Stuart Mullins, Artistic Director of Pursued by a Bear,
by e-mail stuart@pbab.org

Or by post addressed to

'In The Mix'
4a Nelson Road,

by the 9th of February 2004.

Please send a CV (which includes the projects you have worked with community groups on) and a 200 word statement of how you would research, develop and draft a touring theatre piece which reflects the importance of the immigrant and post-immigrant communities in regional towns and cities.
