Ismail Merchant (1936 - 2005)

Film producer Ismail Merchant has died at the age of 68. The exact cause of death is unknown, but he had been suffering from stomach problems for a year and had just had an operation for abdominal ulcers. He died in a London hospital on Wednesday 25th May with his family around him.

As half of the Merchant Ivory partnership with James Ivory, he produced many classic films, such as Howard's End, A Room with a View, The Remains of the Day and Maurice. The partnership's films - which won no less than six Oscars and 31 nominations since 1961 - developed such an individual style and "Merchant Ivory" became as much a description of a style of film-making as a name: literate and stylish costume dramas, to which he added "good stories". "It should capture something wonderful with some great characters whether it's set in the past or in the future," he told Associated Press in an interview last year.

He will be buried in Mumbai, the former Bombay, where he was born.
