New Culture Secretary New prime minister Gordon Brown has appointed James Purnell to succeed Tessa Jowell as culture sectretary in his cabinet reshuffle. James Purnell (37) took a First in PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Oxford and joined Tony Blair's private office while Labour was in opposition. He then worked for the Institute for Public Policy Research and became a councillor in Islington from 1994 to 1995. He spent two years at the BBC in the mid-90s as head of corporate planning. After the Labour victory of 1997 he became a special advisor on sport to No. 10 and then was elected to the safe Labour seat of Stalybridge and Hythe in Greater Mancheste in 2001r. He spent some time in the Whips' office and, thenwas financial secretary to the Treasury from 2003-2004. After the 2005 general election, became a junior minister in the DCMS, the Minister for Creative Industries and Tourism. After this he moved to to the Department for Work and Pensions, where he was in charge of pension reform. The former culture secretary Tessa Jowell becomes Olypics minister. Although this is not a cabinet post, she will attend cabinet meetings when required.
