The Joanna David Award Winner The Unicorn Theatre has announced the first winner of the Joanna David Award. The Award will support a young theatre artist in his or her professional development building theatre-makers of the future. The winner of the 2011 Joanna David Award is Ibrahim Shote. The Award was announced on Wednesday 16 November at a reception at Clarence House, hosted by the Unicorns Patron, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall. Ibrahim Shote was chosen by a panel of judges consisting of Artistic Director Purni Morell, Production Manager Phil Clarke and Director of the Young Company Nadia Fall. His ambition is to be a theatre director, and this award will give him the opportunity to assist a guest director on one production in the upcoming Unicorn season, under the artistic leadership of Purni Morell. During his ten-week placement, he will be mentored by the Artistic Director and the whole Unicorn team. The Unicorn believes this will offer him a genuine opportunity to further his career and place himself on the next rung of the theatre ladder. He is a young man who grew up locally, and recently graduated from Lewisham College with a triple distinction in the National Diploma in Performing Arts. He attended the Globe Academy in Southwark, and has played a significant role in the creative life of the borough. He has worked on projects at the Young Vic, National Theatre Studio and Southwark Playhouse, and is also a co-founder of Southwark Playhouse Young Company.
