Kathy Staff as Nora Batty

Kathy Staff (1928 - 2008)

Actress Kathy Staff has died at the age of 80. She had been ill for some time.

She is best known for playing battleaxe Nora Batty in the world's longest running sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine. She appeared in its first episode in 1973 and in a further 242. Known for her wrinkled stockings and her relationship with her next-door neighbour Compo Simonite (played by the late Bill Owen), she also appeared in early soap Crossroads as cleaner Doris Luke and in Emmerdale Farm (now simply Emmerdale) and Coronation Street, as well as No Frills and Follyfoot.

She was also a regular in Open All Hours, which starred Ronnie Barker and David Jason, playing Mrs Blewitt, a similar character to Nora Batty.

Her stage career included Mrs Northrop in When We Are Married at the Whitehall in 1986 and Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest at Birmingham Rep in 1989. She also toured the UK in Sailor Beware! in 1992/3. She published her life story Kathy Staff, Wrinkles and All in 1997.

She was born Minnie Higginbottom in Dukinfield, Cheshire.
