New Season in Keswick Keswick's Theatre by the Lake on the bank of Derwentwater in The Lake District is about to open the first half of its summer season which, as always, consists of six plays running alongside one another in rep between the end of May and the beginning of November. The season launches in the main house with Ian Forrest's production of Alan Ayckbourn's musical comedy A Chorus of Disapproval showing the parallels between the characters and events in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera and the real people and events in the amateur operatic society performing it. The opening studio production is David Harrower's powerful Blackbird about sexual obsession and its aftermath directed by Mary Papadima. Opening at the beginning of June is an adaptation of P G Wodehouse's Blandings novel Summer Lightning by Giles Havergal set, of course, in a 1920s country house and featuring scandalous memoirs, pretty chorus girls and a prize-winning pig. Alongside this in the studio will be Shelagh Stephenson's comedy about three sisters dealing with bereavement and unreliable memories in The Memory of Water. In July, a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream will open in the main house alongside a studio production of Rick Thomas's For All Time, a world premiere commissioned to celebrate the theatre's tenth anniversary season that looks at who Shakespeare was and what brought his glittering career to an end. The season officially opens on 23 May with the six productions running on a variety of different days and times right up to 7 November. David Chadderton
