Knife Crime Play on Tour

London's Chickenshed is about to tour the UK with their production, Crime of the Century, a story about knife crime amongst young people today. It takes the audience on a stark journey showing the build up and repercussion of one fatal moment. It is hard hitting and socially relevant theatre tackling issues that many shy away from.

In 2008 Shaquille Smith, aged 14, was stabbed and killed outside his house. He was sitting on a park bench with his sister when a group of young people rode up to him on their bicycles and he couldn’t answer their question. They beat him, he crawled into a hedge and they stabbed him to death and slashed his sister. He was outside his house – he wasn’t in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was a senseless murder.

Shaquille isn’t the only victim. The perpetrators of the crime are now in prison – their lives of freedom are over. Parents have lost their sons, families are devastated and friends left bereft and confused.

Crime of the Century isn't a story of one particular person, the story has been based on experiences of our staff and cast members, together with interviews taken from victims, perpetrators, families, surgeons, police officers and ex-offenders whose lives have been affected by knife crime.
