The MGM Story, Hope Mill Theatre

Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester is crediting the movie La La Land with a spike in interest for its musical theatre productions.

The theatre, which opened in January last year, says audience numbers are up a massive 80% compared to last year, and believes some of the increase could be due to the continued popularity the movie, which has received 14 Oscar nominations.

On the day of the awards (February 26), Hope Mill will be throwing open its doors to two performances of The MGM Story.

It traces the story of the Golden Age of song and dance and tells the tale of how the studio fostered the talents of stars including Judy Garland and Gene Kelly and composers such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin (and scores of others). Resident producer Katy Lipson is producing the show, which is touring the UK.

Other upcoming performances at Hope Mill include YANK, a moving gay love story set in World War Two which pays homage to the music of the 1940s and runs from March 9 to April 8.
