Larson's Only Other Work to Receive UK Showcase

Four songs from Tick Tick Boom, the only other show by the late Jonathan Larson, composer of smash hit Broadway musical Rent, will receive their UK and European première as part of the second in the West End's acclaimed Notes from New York series, which will be performed at London's Donmar Warehouse for one night only on Sunday 7th March, starring Debbie Kurup, Paul Spicer, Julie Atherton and Craig Purnell.

Having originally been produced in New York in 1991, Tick Tick Boom has yet to receive a UK staging, the international rights having been closely controlled by the Larson Estate with various interested parties reportedly refused the opportunity to produce on the grounds that their proposals for the show weren't suitable. It is therefore both an honour and a privilege for the team behind Notes from New York to be able to use this material in the show, which will also feature songs from the Pulitzer Prize winning Larson's Rent alongside the work of Tony Award winners William Finn (Falsettos, A New Brain) and Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World, Parade, The Last Five Years).

"We're delighted that the Larson Estate have granted us permission to use songs from Jonathan's Tick Tick Boom," says David Randall, the director of Notes from New York. "It's a real coup for us to have secured the rights to this material and both the performers and the creative team are looking forward to presenting the work in front of a UK audience for the very first time. Those familiar with Jonathan's work will know what an extremely exciting prospect this is. Larson virgins, prepare to be blown away."

Tick Tick Boom tells the story of Jonathan Larson's life and the four songs from the show that will feature in Notes from New York are Johnny Can't Decide, a tribute to Jonathan's career choices as a struggling composer, the rather aptly entitled Sunday, an inspired inversion of his mentor Stephen Sondheim's song of the same name from Sunday in the Park with George, the female tour de force Come to Your Senses and the show's anthem, Louder Than Words, all of which are reminiscent of his eclectic score to Rent.

Notes from New York stars Debbie Kurup, well known for her critically acclaimed portrayal of Mimi in the recent tour and West End seasons of Rent; Paul Spicer, whose credits include lead roles in The Witches of Eastwick, Fame and Taboo; Julie Atherton, who has just completed a Christmas season playing Serena in Fame at the Edinburgh Playhouse and Craig Purnell, whose credits include the RSC production of The Secret Garden and Songs for a New World at the Bridewell. Young musical theatre stars Paul Spicer and Julie Atherton received critical acclaim for their performances in the first Notes from New York at the Arts Theatre in November last year and return by popular demand.
