ACE Gives Leicester £12M

An East Midlands theatre development has been awarded £12million by the Arts Council.

Leicester's proposed performing arts and conference centre, due to open in 2007 at a total cost of £31million, will replace the Haymarket and Phoenix theatres. The building will form the centrepiece of a huge new cultural quarter in the St George's district of the city.

The glass-fronted, dual-stage theatre and conference hall has been designed by architect Rafael Vinoly, runner-up in the competition to develop New York's Ground Zero.

Helen Flach, executive director of Arts Council England East Midlands, said: "Arts Council England is looking forward to working with Leicester City Council and other partners to create a stunning centre for the performing arts.

"Not only will it be a flagship building for the arts in Leicester and the East Midlands, but it will also have an important national and international role."

Leicester City Council leader Roger Blackmore said: "This significant funding is good news for this key development, which is another major step in the regeneration of our city centre."
