Fringe Company Encourages Others with New Award

To celebrate their tenth consecutive Edinburgh Fringe Festival Les Enfants Terribles has announce their new Les Enfants Terribles Award.

The award is designed to help an exciting new company producing original work to be able to bring their show to the Edinburgh Festival.

Over the ten years of their existence Les Enfants Terribles have become festival favourites, winning huge critical acclaim and a host of awards - and despite their work now touring extensively, transferring to London's West End and traveling all over the word they have maintained their presence and dedication to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

As a company Les Enfants Terribles have never received any regular funding and hope to try and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit amongst young companies, helping them to achieve their goals by rewarding them for their artistic achievement, ambition and desire to produce original work.

"Ten years ago I set up Les Enfants Terribles with no money, no connections and no idea what I was doing," said Oliver Lansley, artistic director of Les Enfants Teribles. "What I did have however was a burning desire to make interesting and exciting theatre and an excellent team of people around me who felt the same. The one thing I really needed was for someone to see the quality of work we were producing and to give us a chance.

"I needed someone to just give us an injection of cash and let us use it how we saw fit to make the best show we could.

The intention behind this award is to reward people for their artistic merit and ambition, putting the focus very much on the practical aptitude of creating theatre as opposed to the often long winded and administrative process of finding funding.

"We want to encourage an entrepreneurial attitude amongst young companies, empowering them to find innovative ways of creating top class theatre that will allow them to flourish in such a difficult financial climate.

"We aim to encourage them to produce exciting and original work and help them showcase it at the Edinburgh Fringe - the greatest Theatre Festival in the world."

The winner of the award will receive:

  • A cash injection of £1000
  • A guaranteed slot at The Pleasance Theatre plus additional support from one of the most prestigious venues at the festival.
  • Mentoring from Les Enfants Terribles Theatre company.

The company will be accepting submissions from the 1st of September. Five shortlisted companies will be notified in December. Then in early 2012 a showcase performance will be held where each company will be asked to perform a 20 minute extract of their chosen piece. The judging panel will then decide upon a winner.

The award will only be open for Original pieces (newly written, devised or adapted) as opposed to productions of existing material.

Applicants need to answer the following:

  • Who are the company/individual presenting the work? (up to 500 words). It can be a company newly formed for this production.
  • What is the piece you want to produce? (Up to 500 words)
  • How do you plan to make it happen, and to raise the additional finances required? (Up to 500 words)
  • What relevant experience do you have? (Up to 500 words)
  • Why should you be awarded the Les Enfants Terribles Award? (Up to 500 words)
  • One A4 sheet of supplementary material is also allowed.

Applying for this award means the company commits to being available to perform at Edinburgh 2012 and also to be able to produce a 20 minute segment of their chosen work in time for the early 2012 showcase.
