Ian Charleson Award winner

The winner of this year's Ian Charleson Award for an outstanding performance by a young actor in a classical role goes to David Oyelowo for his performance as Henry in the RSC's Henry VI (Parts I, II and III).

Smith "concerned" over ACE plans for regions

"The Stage" reports that Culture Secretary Chris Smith has expressed some concern about the Arts Council of England's plans to reduce the size and role of the Regional Arts Boards. Although he understands the desire to cut out a layer of bureaucracy, he is concerend that there should be a strong regional voice.

It is understood that the deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, is furious with ACE for its going in the face of the government's desire for devolution. However ACE does not need government permission as the RABs are not statutory bodies but were created by the Arts Council.

1m advance for the Globe

Advance booking for the Globe's 2001 season reached 1m a day before it did last year, giving rise to the hope that this will be the most successful season so far.

National Student Drama Festival opens on 4th

The National Student Drama Festival opens in Scarborough on 4th April and continues until 11th. Held in association with the "Sunday Times", the Festival showcases the best in student drama.
