Today is National Arts Day

(That's Sunday, 24th June, by the way) But did you know it? An early day motion, supported by Chris Smith, in the last parliament made it so, but it has not made any impact on the nation, even those working in the Arts!

Stafford-Clark throws his hat into the ring

In an interview in The Stage, Max Stafford-Clark, artistic director of Out of Joint, declared his interest in becoming Trevor Nunn's successor at the Royal National Theatre. Nunn has declared that he will not seek a second term as artistic director when his present contract runs out in September next year.

The post will not be advertised but appropriate people will be approached by the National's Board. Stafford-Clark's name has been touted as a possibility, along with other luminaries such as Stephen Daldry, Sam Mendes, Nicholas Hytner, Michael Grandage, Jude Kelly and John Caird.

One of the major criticisms of Trevor Nunn's tenure on the South Bank has been the RNT's conservative programming and the lack of new writing. Stafford-Clark, however, has been associated with new writing all his professional life, at the Traverse, the Royal Court and with Out of Joint.
