Joan Sims

Actress Joan Sims, one of the last remaining members of the team that made the Carry On films, has died, aged 71.

Although best known for appearing in 24 Carry On films, she had a wider career both onstage and in film. After leaving RADA, she spent two years in rep before her first film (Colonel March Investigates, starring Boris Karloff), and then went on to make a series of films such as The Belles of St Trinians and Doctor at Sea.

Her last appearance was in 2000 with Judi Dench in the TV film Last of the Blonde Bombshells. In the same year she published be autobiography High Spirits.

Playwriting award

The winner of this year's Meyer-Whitworth Award for new writing is Ray Grewal for his play My Dad's Corner Shop. He wins £8,000.

The annual award is administered by the Arts Council and is given for the play that shows "developing new talent". Previous winners include Conor McPherson and David Harrower.
