"Use lottery money," says Smith

ACE can still save England's producing theatres by using Lottery cash, Culture Secretary Chris Smith said this week in an interview with The Stage. ACE has enough funds under the stabilisation programme, which is backed by Lottery money, to clear the accumlated £3.5m deficits, he insisted. ACE could do this at any stage, he insisted.

Scottish National Theatre gets closer

The Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST) has put forward four proposals for possible models for a Scottish National Theatre. The proposals all envisage a National Theatre company, not a building, which would present six to eight productions a year but wopuld also provide cash to enhance existing productions and tours. The minimum annual subsidy required would be £2.8m.
