Jo Weston, chief executive of the Arts Council of Wales, surprised the arts world in Wales on Friday evening (15th September) by announcing her resignation. No reasons were given in the very bland statement, but Weston and the entire council have been the focus of huge amounts of criticism for many months, not least from the Welsh Assembly, the devolved parliament for Wales.
According to the Western Mail (Wales' main newspaper) on Thursday, the Welsh Assembly's Post-16 Committee is due to publish proposals for a "root and branch" re-organisation of ACW and the creation of a new organisation, Cymru'n Creu (Wales is creating: only the Welsh will be used in the name), which will link together the main organisations in the cultural field. It will be chaired by the Welsh Cabinet Secretary, Tom Middlehurst.
Among the proposals the Western Mail says will be revealed next month will be the devolution of much of ACW's work to four regional offices.
(For non-Welsh speakers - i.e. most of us! - Cymru'n Creu is pronounced Cumree n Croy.)
