Blackfriars Investments, which owns the Mermaid Theatre and the neighbouring offices, have agreed to build a 500+ seat theatre as part of the site's redevelopment, rather than the 300-seater which was in their original plans. They have been forced into increasing the size of the theatre as a result of pressure, but they now claim that, because of the increased size, they will not be able to charge the peppercorn rent originally proposed.
