Dateline: 26h March, 2002 New Arts and Business Venue for the Midlands On Monday 21st January 2002 work began on the redevelopment of the Civic Hall in Lichfield. The £5million redevelopment will see the old Civic Hall transform into a new arts and business venue: the Lichfield Garrick. The Lichfield Garrick is set to become the cultural focal point of the Lichfield District. It will act as the principal arts venue with professional and amateur theatre, gallery space and a performing studio for music and cutting edge productions. As a business venue the Lichfield Garrick will provide conference facilities and corporate entertainment as well as a base for business support. The Lichfield Garrick will feature a main auditorium for a theatre audience of approximately 500 and a smaller studio for an audience of approximately 200 people. The theatre will be an ideal venue for touring companies, together with the studio that will combine as a smaller performing area and rehearsal space as well as generating further conference facilities. The Lichfield Garrick has been designed by award winning architects Short and Associates. The design incorporates an environmentally friendly structure to produce an innovative ventilation system, similar to that of the Contact Theatre in Manchester and the Queens Building at De Montfort University, which has won numerous design awards including 'Green Building of the Year 1995'. The Lichfield Garrick will provide an environmental benchmark for future buildings, to reinforce the venue as a major attraction. The Lichfield Garrick is a project of Lichfield District Council and is part of a new effort to develop and unify the arts within the district. As part of this development Paul Everitt has been appointed as Artistic Director. This role, however, is unlike any other in the country, as Paul will act as both the Artistic Director for the Lichfield Garrick and as the lead arts officer for the Lichfield District as a whole. With the planned opening of the Lichfield Garrick in 2003 Paul is already beginning programming for the first year.
