Linbury Prize for Stage Design 2011

Twelve young designers have been announced as finalists in this year's Linbury Prize for Stage Design, which gives recent design graduates the chance to showcase their work in an exhibition from 31st October to 27th November at the National Theatre and compete to design a forthcoming production for a professional theatre company.

Each of the four commissioning companies (see our news story of 19th April) has chosen three finalists to work with on designing a forthcoming production. One from each group will then win a commission to realise their designs on stage, with one of the top four competitors awarded the overall winner's title. The exhibition, featuring work by all twelve finalists, runs from 31st October to 27th November at the National Theatre, with the winners announced at a ceremony on 10th November.

The finalists, the companies and the productions are:

Lyric Hammersmith and Filter
Artistic Director Sean Holmes and Filter reunite to remix, rework and revitalise A Midsummer Night's Dream. This new version of Shakespeare's classic play follows the success of Three Sisters and Twelfth Night.

Colin Eccleston - The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, 2011
Hyemi Shin - Wimbledon College of Art, 2011
Anne Gry Skovdal - The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, 2011

Royal Opera House Linbury Studio Theatre (ROH2)
Composer Neil Hannon's 2012 OperaShot will be based on the extraordinary novel Roy Orbison in Clingfilm by the Düsseldorf-based internet eccentric Ulrich Haarbürste. The production will be directed by John Lloyd Davies, and continues ROH2's OperaShot policy of commissioning composers from outside the operatic mainstream to create new and innovative music theatre work.

Emma Bailey - Motley Theatre Design, 2010
Nina Patel-Grainger - Nottingham Trent University, 2010
Holly Piggott - Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, 2011

The Opera Group
The Opera Group's winner will design the premiere production of a new opera by British composer Edward Rushton and Indian poet Jeet Thayil, Babur in London. Four young people believe they have found their true destiny, until the ghost of a 500-year old Indian emperor, the first of the Mughals, rides up the Thames. This major international collaboration is a partnership with Anvil Arts, Opera North, the British Council, Pro Helvetia and the Ensemble fur Neue Musik Zurich. The production, directed by John Fulljames, will tour Switzerland, India and the UK.

Sarah Beaton - Central School of Speech and Drama, 2011
Jacob Hughes - Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, 2011
Ellan Parry - Motley Theatre Design, 2011

Watermill Theatre, Newbury
Shakespeare's The Tempest will use a combination of the Watermill's trademark actor musicians with a newly composed score creating the 'music of the isle'. The production will be directed by Paul Hart who trained at the Donmar Warehouse and is now Associate Director for Propeller.

Guoda Jaruseviciute - Central School of Speech & Drama, 2011
Georgia Lowe - Motley Theatre Design, 2010
