Autumn at the Little Angel

The Little Angel Theatre in Islington has announced its season from September to December:

9th - 11th Sept
The Wild Night of the Witches
Directed by Ronnie Le Drew and Sarah Wright. Puppets carved by John Wright.
Little Angel Theatre opened its doors in 1961 with a 35 minute long-string marionette performance of The Wild Night of the Witches. To celebrate its 50th anniversary the theatre is refurbishing and reviving this production with a cast of trainee marionettists.
The two rival witches Mrs. Itchweed and Gerty MacNamara battle furiously over poisons and cough potions, while Mrs. Rushbridges and Miss Pinkney battle over Mr. Gimp! You can be sure, it all ends in a Wedding... Or...?

The Chalk Giant

For age 4+
This show explores the myths and legends surrounding giants, from the chalk giants carved into the English landscape to Jack and the Beanstalk. Written by celebrated poet John Agard, the performance uses a range of storytelling techniques; the performers mix chalk drawings, live film projection, shadow puppets, poetry and song to create an absorbing and magical piece of theatre.

Pinocchio

Steve Tiplady, as Geppetto, uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy, and the puppet-maker who wants to be a real father. Pinocchio is carved on stage, brushes become a fox and the shadow of two saws transforms into a giant shark. An element of improvisation makes each performance unique. Puppetry, shadows, illusion and specially composed music combine to create a show with something for all ages.

The DaSilva Marionette Circus

The DaSilva marionette circus troupe has been delighting audiences of all ages, around the world, for almost half a century. Each of the one third life-size marionettes has been individually crafted to perform its own feat of dazzling dexterity, on the big top stage. This traditional family show, now in its second generation, has been brought right up to date with all the thrills and spills of a real-life circus.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier
By Banyan Theatre
For age 3+
Five and twenty tin soldiers all identical but for one. A chance tumble from a window ledge begins a journey into the unknown... This adaptation of the traditional tale illustrates the transition between fantasy and reality told gently through puppetry, music and storytelling.

18th - 23rd Oct
Aladdin

For age 4+
This colourful tale from the Arabian Nights is set in the Middle East: a place of mystery, enchantment and strange, mythical creatures. Large scale contemporary Shadow Puppet theatre tells of a poor street boy who falls hopelessly in love with a Royal Princess. What magic would he need just to see her again?

The Gingerbread Man

Using puppetry, live cooking, and a sprinkle of imagination, The Gingerbread Man is brought to life in a brand new way. Two children are helping their mother in the kitchen. But when they are left to their own devices, the mischievous pair accidentally create the Gingerbread Man. He leads them on an adventure, where they encounter curious animals and cause a lot of mess, plus there’s a delicious ending for everyone!
At 11am and 2pm daily

A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings
Little Angel Theatre in association with Kneehigh Theatre
Age 6 to adult
Inspired by the by Gabriel Garcia Marquez short story for children. In a startling world of ruined beauty and magic reality a very old man with enormous wings crashes to earth in a flurry of feathers. Found by the villagers behind the chicken coop, nothing will ever be the same again.
Kneehigh Theatre’s joint artistic director Mike Shepherd and Little Angel Theatre’s founding family - Lyndie, Sarah and Joe Wright – celebrate the culmination of Little Angel’s 50th anniversary year with this exciting new production.

This classic story is retold by Little Angel Theatre. As the Three Bears head out for a quiet family picnic in the countryside, wild-child Goldilocks mischievously explores their home.
