Liverpool Only Tenth Arts City Liverpool has been soundly beaten by Capital of Culture rivals as 'capital of the arts' A new study puts Newcastle-upon-Tyne as the number one city in the UK for arts provision and attendance, with Liverpool, the north west city that just beat it to the title of European Capital of Culture, way behind at number ten. The study was conducted by Dr Geoff Ellis of Jaywing for Artsworld TV channel and used criteria such as attendance at cultural events and levels of funding from the Arts Council to rate fourteen cities in the UK. Newcastle has the second highest number of theatres, its citizens are more likely to visit concerts, art galleries and museums and it has better facilities such as bookshops and libraries than many of its rivals. Liverpool, the city that narrowly snatched the Capital of Culture title from favourites Newcastle in 2003, does not even come out top of the region, as local rival Manchester takes the number seven position.
