London/LA Music Theatre Link-Up

Last year Mercury Musical Developments commissioned nine writers to create themed musical double-bills in collaboration with writers from the Academy for New Musical Theatre in Los Angeles. The MMD Writer Associate teams who were chosen to take part in this partnership project were:

Chris Burgess (lyrics/book)
Denise Wright (music)

Alexander Bermange (music/lyrics)
Michael Gyngell (book)

Peter Shrubshall (music/lyrics)
Richard Free (music/lyrics)
Pete Gallagher (book)

Chris Morris (lyrics)
William Morris (music)
Simon Warne (book)

Each team worked on a theme, as did their American counterparts, and the results are presented as a series of double bills, to be performed at the Century City Playhouse in California on 5th and 19th April, and 3rd and 10th May. Some of these double-bills will also be performed at Theatre Building Chicago in August as part of 'Stages 2005' and in London this autumn.

The themes are:

• alien visitations
• dying musical theatre producers and dead playwrights
• William Shakespeare in the world of television soap operas
• the first and last of Shahrazad's 1001 nights
