"Lost" Coward in Southwark A "lost" one-act play by Noël Coward, discovered as part of research for a new book, is to be performed at the Union Theatre in Southwark for the first time since 1922 when it presented by Londons Grand-Guignol Company, which included among its members Sybil Thorndike and her husband Lewis Casson. Called The Better Half, it was discovered in the Lord Chamberlains archives in the British Library by Professors Richard Hand and Mike Wilson during research for their latest book, Londons Grand Guignol and the Theatre of Horror. The book will contain the full text of the play, which is to be performed at the Union Theatre by The Sticking Place as part of their annual Halloween season of horror theatre, Terror 2007. "We were conducting research for our book on Londons Grand-Guignol, a theatre which combined horror and comedy plays on the same bill," said Professor Wilson, "and were thrilled to have found the manuscript to the play that Coward wrote for the company. It was probably the only surviving copy of the play and has not been published before. "This play will no doubt arouse the interest of Coward fans worldwide, especially as it was written at a time when Coward was on the threshold of achieving critical acclaim and fame." The book will be published by the University of Exeter Press in November and the Terror 2007 season runs at the Union Theatre from 16th October to 10th November.
Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
