Lord Arthur's Bed
A Song for the Lovers
The Bad One
Nico Icon Play

New Lowry Studio Season

The Lowry in Salford has announced a series of small-scale productions for its Studio between now and the end of November, plus an acclaimed production in the galleries themselves.

Theatre North will return with its new show Lord Arthur's Bed to open the season. South Manchester-based Monkeywood Theatre Company will bring a new adaptation of its 24:7 Theatre Festival play A Song for the Lovers, and Janice Connolly, better-known for her comedy character Barbara Nice, will appear in The Bad One.

Analogue comes straight from the Edinburgh Fringe with multimedia production Mile End, and Intastella singer Stella Grundy reprises her acclaimed role as Velvet Underground singer Nico in Nico Icon Play from Ultraviolet Productions.

The season ends with Tim Crouch's acclaimed hit of last year's Edinburgh Fringe England, performed in the art galleries at the Lowry just as it was performed in the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh

According to the Lowry's theatre programmer Porl Cooper, "We're often perceived as being somewhat ‘impenetrable’, especially amongst smaller regionally-based companies because we present world-renowned large-scale companies, such as the Kirov, the RSC and Opera North. The 200-seat Studio theatre gives us the perfect opportunity to take risks and this season we're broadening the spectrum of work being presented in there. We’re offering a platform to showcase work that's smaller in scale, younger in years, or has a less well-established profile."

Monkeywood founder and writer Sarah McDonald-Hughes said, "We are thrilled to be performing in such an amazing venue and fantastic theatre space. It is an unbelievable opportunity for us to present our rewritten play to different audiences and we’re really grateful to The Lowry for opening their doors. For smaller-scale theatre companies there are still limited fringe spaces or festivals available in the north west, so this new season is really exciting."

The Lowry is offering a season ticket for all ten Studio shows for just £40.
