Autumn in Liverpool

Liverpool's Everyman and Playhouse theatres have announced their joint season for autumn and winter 2009.

The Playhouse season opens with Lawrence Till's adaptation of Kes, based on the novel A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines, directed by Nikolai Foster and starring Daniel Casey. The production will go on to tour the UK.

As previously announced, Jonathan Pryce will star as old rogue Davies in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker, directed by Christopher Morahan. Alongside Pryce the production will star Tom Brooke and Peter McDonald and will transfer to Theatre Royal in Bath.

Patrick Barlow's comic adaptation of the adventures of Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps, based on the spy novel by John Buchan will be the Christmas production at The Playhouse, whereas The Everyman will feature its usual rock 'n' roll panto from the usual team of Sarah Nixon and Mark Chatterton, this year from the story of Dick Whittington.

Visiting productions include David Wood's adaptation of children's classic The BFG by Roald Dahl from Fiery Light, a National Theatre and Tara Arts new adaptation of Hanif Kureishi's The Black Album, Bristol Old Vic with an adaptation of Spike Milligan's wartime memoir Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall by Ben Power and Tim Carroll, Spymonkey's version of Herman Melville's epic sea adventure Moby Dick and Out of Joint with the only visiting production not based on a book with verbatim theatre specialist Robin Soans's new piece Mixed Up North set in a Burnley youth theatre group.

There will also be comedy from Daniel Kitson, Stewart Lee and Roger McGough and music from Deaf School.

Tickets are available now for Kes, The Caretaker and Dick Whittington and public bookings open for the rest of the season on 6 July.
