Mary Nighy
Lyly's Forgotten Play

Mary Nighy, the daughter of Bill Nighy and Diana Quick, , who recently starred in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette as Princesse de Lamballe, will play a leading role in John Lyly’s Elizabethan comedy Gallathea at the King’s Head, Islington.

Written and last performed in London in 1594, Gallathea was a blockbuster hit in its own time and influenced Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It and The Tempest. Nighy will star as Phillida, a beautiful virgin who disguises herself as a boy to escape the annual sacrifice demanded by the god Neptune. While hiding in a forest, she falls in love with Gallathea, a girl who is also in disguise as a boy for the same reason.

Gallathea is a daring and brilliantly funny exploration of love between men and women, and between two women from John Lyly, who was one of the most popular and celebrated playwrights during the Elizabethan age. It will be performed as a stage reading for one night only on Sunday 13th May as part of Primavera’s Forgotten Classics series, a new season at the King’s Head Theatre, which promises to breathe new life into rarely or never performed dramatic masterpieces from the last five centuries.

Stephanie Sinclaire, Artistic Director of the King’s Head, said, “Primavera has collected a fascinating assortment of extremely interesting material which we are delighted to be playing host to at The King’s Head Theatre. Exploring the deepest roots of our literary tradition is every bit as urgent as developing new work this is a very relevant and important presentation.”
