When the BTG started up, a lot of theatres turned their noses up at websites. Now, it is pleasing that almost all welcome us with open arms, recognising that our 18,000 plus regular readers, all of them interested in theatre, mean that we can compete with almost every publication in the land. Remembering the old days, we have been greatly encouraged by an idea being promoted at the Lyric in Hammersmith. Their press officer Greg Miller is keen to invite the best of the theatre bloggers to review their productions. For some readers, we perhaps ought to explain that a blog is a kind of online diary which can vary in quality from illiterate to professional. This radical move is almost unique at present although it could well spell the way forward for both theatres and bloggers. As a start, the Lyric is opening up its two Christmas productions to any half-way sensible theatre bloggers. The Magic Carpet by Ben Hopkins in the main house is a tale packed with action, adventure, talking donkeys and some clever old rug. In the Studio is the (equally) Magic Lamp, a new version of Aladdin for 3-6 year olds. The British Theatre Guide is both interested in the project and keen to support it. We have offered to publish the best of the blogging reviews, if the writers are happy for us to do so. In addition, we still have scope to take on extra reviewers in London, although ideally pointing more towards the South-East rather than the West. Therefore, if the best of the bloggers wants to "go legit", we will be happy to take them on. To find out more about the shows, go to the Lyric website, at www.lyric.co.uk/ If you are blogging at the moment and want to get some free tickets for the Lyric, the first step is to get in touch with Greg by e-mail to greg.miller@lyric.co.uk Philip Fisher Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
