The Lysistrata Project

London performers join international day of protest aginst war with Iraq

On March 3, 2003, Lysistrata Project London will present a public reading of Tony Harrison's Lysistrata - The Common Chorus Part I as their contribution to an international "theatrical act of dissent" marking the first ever world-wide Theatre event for peace.

To date, over 550 readings of Aristophanes' Lysistrata will be performed in 36 countries on 03/03/03 to voice opposition to the threat of war in Iraq.  Throughout the world thousands of performers will be taking part in the readings.

In New York, participants include high-profile actors such as F. Murray Abraham, Kevin Bacon, Peter Boyle, Kathleen Chalfont, Kyra Sedgwick, Lori Singer, and David Strathairn.  In California, Julie Christie, Alfre Woodard, Christine Lahti, Mary McDonnell, Barbara Williams, Eric Stoltz and Ed Begley Jr. will be taking part.

Lysistrata tells the story of women from opposing states who unite to end a war by denying sex until the men agree to lay down their swords - the original call to "Make Love Not War".

The London reading will raise money for the charity War Child - an International Relief and Development Agency, dedicated to providing immediate, effective and sustainable aid to children affected by war in order to build peace, resolve conflict and empower future generations.

Tony Harrison's powerful adaptation of the play, Lysistrata - The Common Chorus - Part I, has never been performed, this will be its first public airing.

The play will be directed by: Xavier Leret (Artistic Director, Kaos Theatre). The London cast has yet to be confirmed.
