Keane Takes on McCarthy Again - On Stage! The row between Republic of Ireland soccer captain Roy Keane and the team manager Mick McCarthy during the 2002 World Cup, which led to Keane's leaving the tournament in high dudgeon, is to be the subject of a new musical, to be premiered in Dublin in the autumn. Macartacus is written by Arthur Mathews (Father Ted) and Mick Nugent, with music by Paul Winderful, who used to make his lving impersonating U2's Bono, and is expected to be directed by Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot). The play was inspired by Mathews' seeing Jerry Springer - The Opera. According to Nugent, the row was "my generation's civil war". "The nation has not been split apart as much since Irishman fought Irishman in 1921 over the Anglo-Irish Treaty," he added. The musical is modelled on the Spartacus epic, he went on: "Keane and McCarthy are two soldiers going to war with each other." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
