A New West End Theatre

Cameron Mackintosh has plans to open a completely new West End theatre, he told the Sunday Times last week.

At the moment the block which comprises the Queen's, a bar and the Really Useful Group offices and the Gielgud is leased by Mackintosh to RUG but the lease is due to revert to him and he plans to build hid new theatre in the space currenty occupied by RUG and the bar.

But it won't be a traditional West End theatre. There is not, he says, a suitable venue for transferring productions from the Donmar, the Almeida, the Cottesloe and the various finge venues, both in and out of London. He plans a flexible theatre space which will be able to take these shows.

When a production transfers from the fringe into one of the present West End venues, he says, it costs between £300,000 to £400,000 simply to make the necessary architectural changes. His proposed new theatre will avoid that and fill a gap which he has, he says, been aware of for a long time.

The cost of buying the space to build a new theatre would be prohibitive but since he already owns the block it makes, he feels, sound commercial sense to develop it in this way.

Now all he has to do is obtain planning eprmission from Westminster Council.
