Dateline: 23rd January, 2004 The Manchester Festival? Manchester City Council is planning to invest £2m in its own Edinburgh Fringe-style festival, which they hope to launch in 2006. It also hopes that private sources will be willing to invest a further £3m. The consultants hired by the council, Cambridge Policy Consultants, estimate that the festival could bring in over £34m in its first year and attract over 160,000 visitors. The council is also in discussions with the Liverpool Culture Company, the body set up to oversee Liverpool's tenure as Culture Capital of Europe in 2008, on ways and means of spreading the boost to tourism across the North West.
