New Boublil and Schonberg Musical for 2008 Marguerite, a new musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, based on La Dame aux Camélias by Dumas fils, will premiere at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, in May 2008. It will be set in occupied Paris in the Second World War and Marguerite will be a courtesan, mistress of a Nazi officer, who falls in love with a young pianist who a member of the Resistance. It will be directed by Jonathan Kent who is collaborating with Boublil and Schonberg on the libretto. Music is by Michel Legrand. The production was workshopped in London in the last few weeks with Ruthie Henshall playing Marguerite Gautier and Julian Ovenden her lover Armand. Henshall will play the part when the production opens at the Haymarket but Ovenden's availability is not certain, as he has film commitments. In the London workshop the part of Otto, the Nazi officer, was played by Alex Hansen, currently playing Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music at the London Palladium. In comparison to Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, Marguerite will have a small cast, just sixteen, and a group of ten or eleven musicians.
