Maria Björnson

Set and costume designer Maria Björnson died suddenly on Friday, 13th December. Although possibly best known to the theatre community as the award-winning designer of Phantom of the Opera, her wider theatre work include designs for the RSC (Hamlet, The Tempest, Camille, Measure for Measure and A Midsummer's Night Dream), Chiochester Festival Theatre (The Cherry Orchard) and the Old Vic (The Lonely Road). Other musicals credits include the London and Broadway productions of Aspects of Love and Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

She also had a big reputation as an opera designer,:

  • Donnerstag aus Licht, Der Rosenkavalier and The Tales of Hoffman (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden);
  • Die Valküre, Toussant L’Ouverture and The Gambler (English National Opera, Coliseum);
  • The Queen of Spades (Nederlandse Opera);
  • Katya Kabanova and Jenufa (Houston Opera);
  • The Janacek Cycle (Welsh National Opera).

Her awards include two Tonys, two Drama Desk awards, two Drama Magazine awards and the silver medal at the Prague Bienniale.
