Mary Is Too Scary The new stage version of Mary Poppins is too scary for young children, the Prince Edward Theatre has announced, and children under three will not be allowed in. In fact, it is not suitable for children under seven, a spokesperson said. "The theatre doesn't have a certification system, unlike the cinema," said Nick Allott, managing director of co-producers Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. "Therefore we think it is our responsibility to provide guidance to parents who may want to bring their families." The stage show is based, not on the Disney film but on the original novel by Pamela Travers who strongly disliked the film, saying that the nanny had been made much too sugary. She created the story at the age of ten when her mother was threatening suicide after the death of her father, finally pubishing it as a novel in 1934, and she saw the nanny as the embodiment of repression and the release of sexual desire. The show is almost sold out until February and sales are reputed to have topped £12m. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
