Actress Mary Wimbush, who played Julia Pargetter-Carmichael on The Archers for 13 years, has died at the age of 81. She collapsed in the arms of actress Alison Dowling, who plays her daughter-in-law, at the BBC's Birmingham studios after completing a recording of the soap and was rushed to hospital but died of a stroke.

She appeared in the Radio 4 soap three times: she had previously played the schoolteacher Elsie Catcher until the charcater retired in 1967, and then returned in 1969 Lady Isabel Lander. She re-joined the cast in 1992 as Nigel Pargetter (Graham Seed)'s mother.

Most of her long career was spent in radio, taking part in her first broadcast in 1945. She won won a Sony award for best actress in 1991 for her performances in The Horse's Mouth and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and has the role of Lady Edith in The Governor's Consort specially written for her by Peter Tinniswood.

Television work included Aunt Agatha in three series of Jeeves and Wooster and two series of Poldark. She also voiced one of the witches in Macbeth in the BBC's Animated Shakespeare. Her most notable film role was as Mary Smith in Oh! What a Lovely War.

She is survived by a son, two grandsons and a sister.
