Masterson Quits Cuckoo's Nest Producer/director Guy Masterson has withdrawn as director of the forthcmoing prodction of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which is scheduled for a three week run at Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Fringe and then in the West End's Gielgud Theatre. He gave reasons of a personal nature and the stress induced by such and the demanding nature of this production as his reasons but is confident that it will be a huge success. Both his wife and his mother are not well, he added, and he had been working an eighteen-hour day so that "I am very exhausted, physically and emotionally," he said. "The production is in good shape," said producer Nica Burns, "and we continue in rehearsals. We wish Guy well and I look forward to buying him a drink at the bar." According to The Scotsman, which says it received the information from an "insider", there had been clashes between Masterson and the two stars, Christian Slater and Frances Barber, which turned rehearsals into a "nightmare". Masterson, however, denies this. "Christian is gobsmackingly brilliant," he said. "If there was a part written for him its that. Im very pleased with it, but the next two weeks could have possibly pushed me over the edge." However in an interview with the herald on Sunday, Masterson admitted that there were tensions between Barber and Slater. "The creative tension between Christian and Frankie," he said, "did make it harder, because things go slower. They are diametrically opposed in the ways they work, with Christian being free-spirited and working in a very physical way, and Frankie being far more academic . A new director is expected to be appointed shortly. He has been working on the production for about a year. Late in 2003 he told BTG editor Peter Lathan about the production but swore him to secrecy at that time: planning was already in an advanced stage then.
