Matilda the Musical may have left Sunderland Empire but the show’s legacy goes on at three local primary schools.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School in Penshaw, Benedict Biscop CE Academy in Moorside and Hudson Road Primary School, an inner-city school serving Hendon, the City Centre and the East End, are all Change My Story Champion Schools which will work with the RSC and the Empire’s Creative Learning Department to stage a special 45-minute edit of Matilda The Musical as their school play.

The project involves committing to a two-year programme of creative work, including professional development and training opportunities for teachers and working with five other local schools to share skills and knowledge from the programme.

These are just three of the 50 primary schools nationwide chosen to be Change My Story Champion Schools.

Matilda the Musical ended its run at Sunderland Empire on Saturday 2 June. It is estimated that over 50,000 people saw the show in Sunderland with visitors coming not just from the City and the North East but from as far away as Aberdeen and Brighton.
