More than 120,000 people saw 79 performances of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Matilda the Musical at Birmingham Hippodrome.
Fiona Allan, the Hippodrome’s artistic director and chief executive, said, “Matilda the Musical is one of the biggest hit shows of the last decade. It’s been a pleasure to welcome so many young people and their families to the theatre over the past ten weeks. For many this was their first taste of the magic of theatre, and given the standing ovations at every performance, it’s obvious they enjoyed themselves.”
The RSC’s executive director Catherine Mallyon added, “we’re thrilled that Hippodrome audiences have responded so warmly to our production. The show originally opened in Stratford in 2010. Since then it’s played on Broadway and in North America, Australia and New Zealand. It’s shortly to open in Seoul and continues to perform in the West End.
“Despite all that, taking Matilda the Musical to the fantastic Birmingham Hippodrome has been something really special. For the RSC, a company that’s proud to be based in the Midlands, our visit to Birmingham felt as though Matilda had come home.”
