Matthew Bourne

Dorian Gray and Eward Scissorhands

Matthew Bourne has announced one new work and a tour for an existing piece. As we have already reported, his new version of Dorian Gray is to premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in August.

Dorian Gray marks Bourne's company New Adventures’ debut at the Edinburgh International Festival, which, in association with Sadler’s Wells, has commissioned this new production.

Set in the image-obsessed worlds of contemporary art and politics, this dark fairy tale tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London's beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the "It Boy" - an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world.

The cast includes Richard Winsor (Edward in Edward Scissorhands, Angelo in The Car Man) as Dorian Gray, Michela Meazza (Lana in The Car Man, Joyce in Edward Scissorhands) as Lady H and Aaron Sillis (The Car Man) as Basil Hallward. Other cast members include Scott Ambler, Ashley Bain, Jared Hageman, Chris Marney and Shaun Walters.

A Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Matthew Bourne's first new production in almost three years reunites the team that created the double Olivier award-winning hit Play Without Words: designer, Lez Brotherston, composer, Terry Davies and lighting designer, Paule Constable.

Dorian Gray will preview at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, from Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th August before opening at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, on Friday 22nd August, running until Saturday 30th. It will then go on to Sadler’s Wells (Tuesday 2 – Sunday 14 September), The Theatre Royal, Norwich (Tuesday 16th - Saturday 20th September) and the Theatre Royal, Newcastle (23 September 2007 - 27 September).

Meanwhile Bourne's last piece, Edward Scissorhands, starts an international tour in May:

Lyric Theatre, QPAC, Brisbane, Australia (Wednesday 18 – Sunday 22 June)
