For the first time in its 29-year history, Stafford Festival Shakespeare is to perform The Merchant of Venice.
Stafford Gatehouse Theatre and Freedom Leisure will transport Shakespeare’s controversial play to 1950s New York, a city divided by wealth and religion.
Production manager Richard Goodman said, “this is going to be enticing. We have such a treat in store for our audience this year. It’s a play which has everything and it looks at issues that are just as relevant now as they were when the play was first performed.”
Stafford Festival Shakespeare will stage The Merchant of Venice in the open air at Stafford Castle from 27 June until 13 July.
