The Real Bollywood Comes to the UK

The Merchants of Bollywood - "colourful, dynamic, vibrant," as its choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant describes it - is, according to its creators, authentic Bollywood and features genuine Bollywood stars. It comes to the UK this autumn, starting with a short tour and then transfers to the Hammersmith Apollo over the Christmas period.

With a cast of forty dancers, singers, actors and musicians direct from Film City Mumbai, it tells the story of the Merchant family who have been central to the development of Bollywood cinema from Hiralalji Merchant, garndfather of Vaibhavi and her sister, assistant choreographer Shruti.

Harvey Goldsmith (of Live Aid and Live8), who is the production's UK backer, said, “I was taken to see the show by a friend in Australia and fell in love with it on the spot. I was just enveloped by the fantastic atmosphere in the audience. The team have created a truly amazing spectacle of colour and culture, for which I can take no credit at all. I am just giving UK audiences the opportunity to be a part of an invigorating and extraordinary experience.”

With music by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and written and directed by Barbados-born Toby Gough, the show, which was a big hit in Australia, opens at the Alexandra in Birmingham on 24th October beofre touring to Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Bradford, Cambridge and Cardiff. It will be at the Hammersmith Apollo from 21st December, 2006, to 7th January, 2007.
