The Merry Widow Calls at Brighton

The Carl Rosa Company are set to launch a new production of Franz Lehár's passionate romance, The Merry Widow. Featuring a newly commissioned translation by Jeremy Sams, the production stars Jan Hartley as Hanna, Karl Daymond as Danilo, and Victor Spinetti (who recently left the cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as Baron Zeta. The Merry Widow comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton on Tuesday 20 - Saturday 24 April prior to a West End run.

The original production of The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe) premiered at the Theater an der Wien in 1905 with music by Franz Lehár and libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein, from the comedy L'Attaché d'Ambassade by Henri Meilhac. It was first performed in the UK at Daly's in London, in 1906, where it ran for a 778 performances.

This new production features a cast of twenty-nine singers and a new orchestration by Richard Balcombe performed by the Carl Rosa Orchestra.
