Churchill Gets £77,000 Birthday Present

Bromley's Churchill Thetare's thirtieth birthday celebrations came to a dramatic close on the weekend with a sizable present from Arts Council England. A grant of £77,000 has been awarded to the theatre for a pioneering project to develop new writing in South East London.

The grant, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, will enable The Churchill's annual playwriting competition to be expanded. Six new writers will be given the opportunity to have their ideas developed with support from a dramaturge, director and actors. Two plays will then be chosen for further development and full performance at The Churchill in April 2008. The project has been christened Metamorphosis 08.

"Intensive development of new playwrights in the context of a commercially-run theatre is pioneering work and we are hugely grateful for the Art Council's support," said the theatre's Chief Executive Derek Nicholls.

The Churchill has run an annual competition for new short plays culminating in a semi-staged reading since 1998. Metamorphosis 08 has been on the drawing board for several years, and was fittingly announced at Thursday night's Birthday Gala event.

"This is a brilliant way to mark our 30th birthday because it's something so incredibly positive for the future," said Group Education Manager Julia Potts.

"Commercial theatres survive through ticket sales so grants like this one are necessary to enable us to take more risks on stage, create great art and further writing development."

The winning plays will be performed in a specially modified 200-seat Studio Theatre. The Churchill will prioritise actors living in South London when casting the two productions. A series of community learning events including playwriting workshops, drama sessions and post-show talks will also be programmed and given the title Metamorphosis 08 Festival.

Calls for plays will be announced shortly with six to be short-listed in October. The final two plays will be selected in the same month, giving playwrights six months to fine-tune and develop the productions before they're performed onstage in April.
