2011 Meyer-Whitworth Award The winner of the 2011 Meyer-Whitworth Award is David Ireland for his play Everything Between Us, which was first produced at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast by Tinderbox Theatre Company in September 2010. The Award, which is worth £10,000 and is intended to help further the careers of UK playwrights who are not yet established, was presented at a ceremony at the National Theatre yesterday (10th October). The judges for the 20th Meyer-Whitworth Award were Kate Mosse, Rona Munro, Ursula Rani Sarma and Rebecca Gatward. Kate Mosse described David Irelands play as "a compelling and powerful piece of writing, taking important themes and making them relevant and fresh. More than anything, though, it was the sharpness of the dialogue that impressed and the wonderfully realised two female characters - each plausible, each flawed, both finally, in the end, sympathetic. A tour de force from David Ireland. I can't wait to see what he does next." David Ireland said, "I'm honoured and delighted to receive the Meyer-Whitworth Award for Everything Between Us. The play is very close to my heart and was a pleasure to write. To be given this kind of recognition for it is both humbling and inspiring." Supported by the National Theatre Foundation, the Meyer-Whitworth Award is managed by the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland with additional reading support by members of the Playwrights Network. Previous winners include Philip Ridley (The Fastest Clock in the Universe), Diane Samuels (Kindertransport), David Harrower (Kill the Old, Torture their Young), Conor McPherson (This Lime Tree Bower), Dennis Kelly (Osama The Hero), Owen McCafferty (Scenes from the Big Picture), Morna Pearson (Distracted), Ali Taylor (Cotton Wool) and Natasha Langridge (Shraddha).
