Helen Mirren is to play the Queen in a new film, called The Queen, set in the week following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The film is directed by Stephen (My Beautiful Laundrette) Frears, who says that it looks at the death of Diana from the points of view of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister and is based on interviews with "insiders" and royal observers. Mirren, he says, was first choice for the part. Sylvia Syms plays the Queen Mother, with James Cromwell as Prince Philip and Michael Sheen as Tony Blair. "She's not grumpy," Mirren said of the Queen, revealing that she had spent a gtreat deal of time studying her for the part. "I think she's a person who is genuine, she refuses to be fake. She's steady, true, honest and British." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
